There are only a few methods which you can use for your fluorescent lamp disposal based on the latest laws and regulations. One option is to contract with a recycling company to haul away your spent lamps for disposal once you collect many boxes of them which you have to store until you amass a large collection of them. Or, you can use an Akon onsite crusher which will shred the lamps into tiny bits that collect in standard fifty five gallon drums. Each drum will hold up to about 1350 crushed bulbs and will take up a fraction of the space of the traditional “box and store” method.

You will use less space in your facility, save on labor which is required to package the lamps, and better protect your associates from being accidentally cut. A little know fact is that many of the accidental bulb breaks occur during the boxing process. These breaks, while dangerous to the skin, are also dangerous to the lungs. Anyone in close proximity to a break will likely inhale the dangerous mercury vapor which is very dangerous.
Regulations
Under new state and federal waste regulation laws, a business can no longer simply throw their spent lamps into the trash to be hauled away like any other ordinary piece of trash. This is of course a result of the growing awareness to the effects of mercury on the environment and our bodies.
In fact, in the United States alone, there are approximately 649 million fluorescent lamps disposed of every year! That results in approximately 27,000lbs of mercury entering our waters, earth, and animals. This is a statistic from the EPA which carefully monitors this pollution. You can see that fluorescent lamps disposal is a serious problem and it is only getting worse as more and more lights are installed around the country.
It is with these regulations that the problem is slowly being fixed. So even though the laws seem tough on businesses and home owners, they are warranted.
