The bulbs are most often times 4 feet and 8 feet long tubes and must be handled with extreme care or they could break and seriously cut the worker. In addition to the potential breakage, each bulb contains dangerous mercury which when exposed to human lungs, can do serious damage to ones health. An 8 foot long bulb contains about 19 to 76 milligrams of mercury, while a typical 4 foot bulb contains 3 to 6 grams of phosphor powder that is coated on the inside of the fluorescent glass light bulb. Thus, dealing with these dangerous vapors is the most important responsibility of the light bulb crushing machine.
With that requirement, the light bulb crushing machine features a HEPA filter which will collect and store 99.99% of the harmful mercury and phosphor powder once the bulb is crushed. This 3 stage filtration system protects the operator from all of the harmful air borne particles.
